It’s official, in roughly 90 days, the ALCO location in Vandalia will close after serving the area since November 24, 1998. No official date has been set for closing but the countdown has begun
According to local Operations Manager Julia Wood, the store’s lease was up with the Forum Development Group and ALCO’s brass decided to not bring the store back to Vandalia for another multi-year lease.
She said the move had nothing to do with the recent buyout of Hickman’s IGA by County Market, which is the neighboring business.
She also clarified that the ALCO parent company is not going out of business. The store was one of seven Missouri locations. The other six, that include Montgomery City and Hermann, will remain open.
ALCO is refocusing its efforts to opening up locations in metropolitan areas and the Vandalia location is reportedly not a part of that plan.
Current employees at the Vandalia location have been offered the opportunity to transfer to other locations.
“It’s going to be a loss (to the community),” said Wood, who has worked at the Vandalia location for five years and said this is the only place she’s ever worked.
Vandalia area residents will receive one final insert in their mailbox this week.
Sales are expected to begin for onsite merchandise next week.
“We’re going to try to sell the merchandise, the majority of it,” Wood said. “We do want to sell as much as we can. We do want people in here…We will just have in store mark downs. We’re not sure if it will be a flat percentage (at this time).”
Some area residents have expressed to local staff their concern for the business leaving town.
Vandalia’s City Administrator Alan Winders said the city has yet to receive official notice of ALCO’s upcoming plans to leave town.
“It will obviously be a loss to the community,” Winders said. “They’ve been here a long time.”
Concerned citizens are encouraging local residents to call ALCO at 1-800-334-2526 to ask corporate headquarters to change its mind regarding the Vandalia location.
