Abilene Gatson, of rural Vandalia, had an outstanding week at the 2017 Missouri State Fair with her Southdown, Montadale, and Hampshire sheep flocks. Her Hampshire Fall ram lamb was Reserve Champion in the FFA show and went on to win his class in the open show as well. Gatson also exhibited the FFA Reserve Champion Hampshire Ewe.
In the FFA Montadale show, Abilene’s Spring ram lamb was named Champion Ram and her yearling ewe received Champion Ewe honors after winning their respective classes. Showing under the name Baugh and Dunn, Jr. (representing the fourth and fifth generations of Montadale breeders in the Baugh and Dunn families) in the Open Show, she earned the Premier Exhibitor Award.
In the FFA Southdown Show, Abilene won every class she had sheep entered in and went on to win Champion Ram and Champion and Reserve Champion Ewes. Exhibiting in the Southdown Open Show, Gatson placed first in the Fall Ram Lamb, Fall Ewe Lamb, and Yearling Ewe Classes.
Gatson was honored to win the Premier Exhibitor Award in both the FFA Southdown Show and the Open Show.
With her success in the FFA shows, Gatson earned Van-Far FFA the FFA Sheep Sweepstakes Trophy sponsored by MFA, Inc. She was also named an FFA showmanship winner.
Abilene is the daughter of Adam and Julie Gatson and is currently attending the University of Missouri–Columbia where she is majoring in Animal Science.
