A special time for Van-Far sports

Posted on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 10:08 am

I want to publicly congratulate the Van-Far boys track and field team for flexing their dominance this past weekend in Jefferson City and bringing back the school’s first state championship in the sport.
I’m still stunned thinking that just a few years ago, the boys track program hardly had anyone participating in the sport.
The school was then blessed to have coach Blake Logan get a weight lifting and fitness program established, which was badly needed in the district.
Mix in some hard working athletes and other coaches on the way, and now this track and field program is one of the most dominant in the state.
To win a team title is very difficult and to do so by 22 points, that really shows just how dominant this program has become.
While Sharrod Connor is lost to graduation, there is no reason that the returning athletes cannot make a run for a back-to-back title in 2018.
Just as many residents enjoyed the ride of the many talented boys athletes from the era of the state championship basketball team more than 10 years ago, it’s time for folks to recognize just how special this current group has become.
Not only did the boys track and field team win a state title, but Van-Far swept districts in boys sports for the Spring.
The golf team won a district crown and the baseball team completed the sweep last week after their big win over Clopton.
I once covered 13 state champions in three years down in Christian County. In my time there, I don’t remember any of those schools ever sweeping all of the district titles in one of the sports seasons.
This is a truly remarkable achievement for this district.
These athletes have represented the school, their parents, and all residents well with these recent accomplishments.
This is a special ride all of these boys athletes are taking us fans on. Be sure to take the time and congratulate the many athletes if you see them this week. They deserve to be recognized for their hard work and accomplishments.
