The wife of an Audrain County K-9 deputy, Derek Chism and mom of two, Nikole Chism, has become a beacon of hope and generosity.
Nikole started collecting toys for Shriners Hospitals for Children in 2017. Her mission is deeply personal, she noted because it’s her way to give back to the organization that once helped her family in their time of need.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Shriners Hospitals is their commitment to providing care regardless of a family’s financial situation. The hospital said this ensures that every child has access to the best possible medical care without the burden of medical bills.
Shriners Hospitals for Children truly embody a holistic approach to healthcare, addressing not just the physical but also the emotional and social needs of their patients and families.
The Hagan family has a long history with the Shriners. Years ago, their son, Matt, had a severe dirt bike accident that left him unable to walk for a time. The Shriners stepped in, providing the medical care and support Matt needed to literally get back on his feet. His family said their dedication and expertise were instrumental in Matt’s recovery, and the impact of their help was so profound that both Brad and Matt decided to become Shriners themselves. Today, they are proud members of the Little Dixie Shrine Club of Mexico, Mo.
Inspired by the Shriners’ kindness and the transformation they brought to her brother’s life; Nikole decided to start a toy drive. She wanted to bring joy to other children who were going through tough times, just as the Shriners had done for her family. Her initiative quickly gained support from the community, and this year, the Van-Far Student Ambassadors have joined her cause. They are organizing a toy drive to help Nikole collect new, unwrapped toys for the children at Shriners Hospitals.
As the holiday season approaches, Nikole, her dad, and the Van-Far Student Ambassadors are reaching out to the community, asking for donations. Each toy collected will bring a smile to a child’s face and a bit of comfort during their hospital stay. It’s a simple yet powerful way to give back and spread the joy.
So, if you find yourself in a store this holiday season, consider donating a new, unwrapped toy to the toy drive, Nikole said. Your generosity will help brighten the lives of children in need and continue the cycle of giving that the Hagan family holds so dear. Together, we can make a difference, one toy at a time.
The drive runs from Oct. 21 to Dec. 13. Toy drop off is at the Audrain County Prosecutors office, 101 N Jefferson, Room 306, Mexico, Car Quest store locations, Mexico, Columbia, Centralia, Vandalia, Bowling Green, Louisiana, Hannibal, Palmyra and Monroe City, Van-Far High School or Vandalia City Hall.
