The Vandalia Masonic Lodge partnered with the Van-Far Elementary School to promote the love of reading. The Lodge donated four bikes, two of which were given away at the end of first semester.
To be eligible to win the bikes, students needed to complete their nightly Read & Respond Homework for one week. Each time they accomplished this, the students would earn a “fish” ticket for the bikes. Reading Facilitator, Melissa Orr, reported the building completion rate increased throughout the semester and is now at an average of 97-percent.
The students also earned extra tickets for the bike for completing their reading over holiday breaks when it wasn’t assigned. The winners for first semester were Madison Swank and Nikos Connaway.
Two more bikes will be given away at the end of the second semester.
