For die-hard fans of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Vandalia native Lloyd McCurdy is the champion of the Doritos snack chip promotion.
McCurdy’s claim to fame began with the simple purchase of two bags of chips from the Dollar General store in Vandalia.
When McCurdy got home, he noticed a special announcement about a chance to register for a $4,000 grand prize printed on the bottom of the receipt.
Intrigued by the unfamiliar prize give-a-way, McCurdy asked his wife, Paula, to register him into the contest.
Time went by and McCurdy had totally forgot about the contest, until he got the call of a lifetime.
A representative informed him that he was a finalist in the Doritos/Dollar General Summer Slam promotion. He was instructed to check his e-mail for the necessary paperwork that he would need to read over and sign.
McCurdy was called once again, but missed the call because he was busy working. Luckily, his wife got the call that would entitle him and 50 of his friends to superstar treatment, compliments of the WWE.
Even after McCurdy found out that he was the winner of the contest, he still wasn’t sure what he had won.
The prize was a limou-sine ride to Drakes Steak & Ale in Hannibal for dinner. Friends and family enjoyed ribs, chicken, steaks, burgers, pulled pork, curly fries, and Doritos.
To add to the fun, WWE legends Sergeant Slaughter and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat made a special guest appearance to sign autographs.
For the evenings entertainment, the party got to view the WWE’s annual pay-per-view Summer Slam event.
If that wasn’t enough, McCurdy also received $500 in Visa Gift cards and a $100 Dollar General gift card.
Everyone received complimentary gift bags full of WWE merchandise.
While McCurdy doesn’t have time to be a die-hard fan, his 8-year-old granddaughter may be the newest member of the WWE universe.
“Believe it or not, my granddaughter even loved the show. I don’t think she had ever seen professional wrestling before. So overall, it was a great experience,“ McCurdy said.
