The Community R-VI Trojans managed to pick up just one victory during a recent five-game stretch as the team is just days away from the Class 1, District ? Tournament in Madison.
Their lone victory came in a game played at Moberly Area Community College.
The Trojans led the entire Saturday game and pulled out a big 47-34 victory over a squad that also played in the Sturgeon Tournament in January.
“Thought we really took care of the ball,” said Community R-VI head coach Matt Thomas. “Defensively, it was probably one of the better performances we’ve had.”
Cordell Hollensteiner paced the Trojans early with 14 first half points to help his team gain an early edge.
Cadin Escamilla made a big 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to help the Trojans hold on for the 13-point win.
Hollensteiner led the team with 18 points and Cadin Escamilla added eight points.
Both Eric Hombs and Blaze Escamilla scored six points; Klayton Bosworth had four points; Evan Hartsock added three points; and Adam Hombs scored two points.
Falling to rival Wellsville-Middletown on Homecoming
The first of the Trojans’ recent four losses came at home on Homecoming as they dropped a heartbreaker to rival Wellsville-Middletown, 59-50.
Community R-VI played a solid game against one of the better teams in the EMO Conference but unfortunately a two point second quarter doomed them in the tough nine point defeat.
“Played really well minus the second quarter,” Thomas said. “…Had some foul trouble and turned the ball over way too much and then couldn’t climb back out of the hole.”
The Trojans actually led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter before being outscored 19-2 before halftime.
They did manage to score 22 points in the fourth quarter and 36 of their 50 points in the second half but the late rally wasn’t enough.
Hollensteiner scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter alone in the loss. He also had seven rebounds and one steal.
Cadin Escamilla added 10 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal; Matt Gastler tallied seven points and seven rebounds; Blaze Escamilla scored six points; Eric Hombs had four points, four assists, and three rebounds; Danny Kuda scored three points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal; Adam Hombs added one point, one rebound, and one steal; and Bosworth had three assists, one rebound, and one steal.
Going down late to Silex
It appeared the Trojans were set to pick up a needed EMO Conference win when they traveled to Silex recently.
The game was tied at 45-45 with :50 seconds remaining when the Owls took control.
Silex made a big 3-pointer forcing the Trojans to foul and they never recovered as the Owls won 53-45.
“We played with very little passion and emotion,” Thomas said. “Could not get defensive stops when we needed them.”
The Trojans scored 10 points or less in three of the four quarters.
Hollensteiner led Community R-VI with 15 points; Cadin Escamilla added 11 points; both Danny Kuda and Eric Hombs scored nine points; and Matt Gastler scored one point.
Gary Filbert Classic loss
Scoring just four points in two of four quarters hurt Community R-VI in a disappointing 55-43 loss to Tuscumbia. The game was played in Mexico, Mo. as part of the rescheduled Gary Filbert Classic.
The Trojans scored just four points in the opening quarter.
Though the Trojans finished the game with 21 points in the final frame, the late rally wasn’t enough in the 12-point loss.
“A slow first quarter was the difference,” Thomas said. “We couldn’t get anything going offensively. We looked tired and didn’t play with a lot of passion and emotion. We cut the lead in the 4th quarter but just didn’t have enough to finish it.”
Hollensteiner paced the Trojans with 17 points, two rebounds, and one assist; Eric Hombs scored nine points four rebounds, and four assists; Hartsock had eight points and one rebound; Matt Gastler had five points and five rebounds; Nathan Gastler added one point; Dannya Kuda had one assist; Adam Hombs tallied one rebound, one assist, and one drawn charge; and Jaryn Kuda had one assist.
Losing big to Montgomery County
Montgomery County was just too much for Community R-VI in a recent 79-48 loss.
“Montgomery County is a really good team,” Thomas said. “They shoot the ball extremely well and their pressure in the first half caused us to turn it over way too much.”
The Trojans had just 22 first half points before scoring 26 in the final two quarters.
Hollensteiner paced the Trojans with 19 points; Jaryn Kuda had eight points; Nathan Gastler scored six points; Danny Kuda added five points; Eric Hombs scored four points; Matt Gastler added three points; and Adam Hombs scored two points.
