Community R-VI head golf coach Vicki Briggs is looking forward to a strong performance this season — perhaps the best yet.
Community R-VI has a full roster of returning varsity players. Those returning to the squad include seniors Caleb Bertels and Chris Wieberg, who qualified for state sectionals last season.
“We played a practice round at the Mexico Country Club last week and all the boys shot under their averages from last year,” Briggs said. “(Bertels) will be the number one player, and he brings three years of experience with him. Treyton (Kobush) is a very promising young player and will challenge (Bertels). The three seniors provide excellent leadership for our team.”
Those seniors are Bertels, Chris Wieberg, and Sean Wilson. Briggs said up-and-comer sophomore Trever Hoyt will also help boost the team’s performance this season.
“(Hoyt) can generate a huge amount of clubhead speed but needs to bring it under control,” she said.
Briggs said improvements have come from Wilson over last season with consistent performance expected from Wieberg. Junior Alex Becker and sophomore Brian Allen will fill in on varsity when needed.
“We do not have the large turnout from last year, but I do have Keith Caldwell, a senior, also returning, and he will be sharing his time with the track team,” Briggs said.
She said the weather has pushed the team to practice indoors reviewing rules and practicing swings. But she hopes a promising long-range weather forecast will allow the team some time on the driving range and putting green.
“This year, we are hoping to break 200 for a team score, have a strong outing at district, and send some players on the state tournament,” she said.
