Caryn Atkinson looks on as the bus pulls away heading towards the Special Olympics for students Zaid Palomares and Landon Donaldson.

Rocky Balboa said “Every champion was once a contender who refused to give up.” Recently on a Friday morning, students at Community R-VI lined the hallways and circle drive to cheer on fifth grader Zaid Palomares and third grader Landon Donaldson as they headed out to compete at the Special Olympics fall track meet at South Callaway High School in Mokane, Mo. As the Rocky theme blared over the speakers throughout the school, the Trojan Pride for these two athletes was overwhelming. Community R-VI sent 20 students and five staff members to travel with the boys. The cheering and support was outstanding. This is the second Special Olympics track meet that Community R-VI attended with plans to attend many more in the future.
Zaid took silver in both the softball throw and standing long jump and bronze in the 100 meter dash. Landon brought home a gold medal for his standing long jump and two silver medals for both the 50 yard dash and baseball throw.
