Community R-VI in Laddonia has a new softball coach who is focused on developing the team’s defensive and offensive abilities.
Some may know the coach as Ms. Asbury, the former junior high softball and varsity basketball coach at Van-Far, who is now the high school softball and track coach at R-VI.
Since last school year she married and is now known as Mrs. Simmons off the field.
One task Coach Simmons has is trying to fill the void left by graduating Seniors Paige Curtis and Paige Harris who received second team all-EMO Conference honors.
Coach Simmons is working with a relatively young team. Nonetheless, Simmons is looking to build a strong cohesive unit.
The Lady Trojans roster will include five seniors in Katie Carline, Lindsey Gastler, Mia Knipfel, Emmalee McCoskey, Madison Wieberg, Junior Sam Jackson and Sophomores Courtney Bertels, Danielle Brooks, Mikyla Clubb, Rebecca Hagan, and Sam Jett.
The Lady Trojans struggled with errors last season, so much that one game made the record books.
Coach Simmons said she expects the Lady Trojans to continue focusing on basic fundamentals and she says they have showed improvement in practices.
Coach Simmons is also looking for a solid contribution from freshman players Amber Harrison and Danielle Jackson who gained invaluable experience playing in the inaugural Jr. High program last season.
The Lady Trojans first game of the season will be at home August 30 versus the R-II Marion County Lady Mustangs at 5 p.m.
