Free throw efficiency and the pep of Senior Night helped the Community R-VI boys basketball team in a 58-47 home-court victory Friday night, February 15, during the squad’s final regular season contest.
The Trojans were tied at 11 points in the first half, shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 1-for-1 from the free throw line.
Community R-VI won the second quarter 15-10 as they went 10-for-23 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free throw line in the first half for a 26-21 edge heading into the locker room.
“(Bowling Green) came out and played well offensively and defensively,” Community R-VI head coach Dave Smith said. “They played hard. They’re a good team.”
The teams battled in the third quarter nearly point-for-point before the Trojans ended the quarter up 42-35.
Community R-VI opened the fourth quarter with a 8-0 run, winning it 16-12.
Overall, the Trojans hit 18-of-41 shots from the field and 18-of-21 free throws.
“We made enough free throws to stretch the lead and came out with a nice conference win,” Smith said.
Justin Durham led the Trojans with 15 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and one steal; Sean Wilson followed suit with 15 points, four rebounds, and two assists; Clay Thebeau chipped in 10 points, one rebound, two assists, and two steals; Conner Brooks tallied 10 points, one rebound, and one assist; Lane Thebeau added 7 points and one rebound; and Kaleb Harris had one point with two steals.
Knocks off Marion County
With four Trojans hitting double digits, Community R-VI pulled out a 57-45 victory over a tough Marion County squad on Thursday, February 14.
The Trojans held an early lead after a 15-7 first quarter and edged Marion County in the second for a 25-16 lead at the half.
“We got up early on Marion,” Smith said. “Every time they made a run, we came back and made a big score and got a good stop. Beating them on their home floor is big win for us.”
Community R-VI continued its dominance in the second half with a 18-17 run in the third quarter, closing the game 14-12 in the fourth.
Clay Thebeau led with 18 points with one three-pointer and four rebounds; Brooks chipped in 12 points with two three-pointers; Durham added 12 points; Lane Thebeau had 10 points; and Wilson had three points with seven rebounds and six assists.
Defeats Montgomery County
The Trojans beat No. 2 seed Montgomery County 57-43 on the road Tuesday, February 12.
Community R-VI won the first quarter 17-13 and managed a 31-20 edge at the half. The Trojans posted 12 points in the third quarter and finshed the contest losing the fourth 14-13.
Lane Thebeau led with 13 points and three assists; Wilson had 12 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals; Durham chipped in 10 points with seven rebounds; Brooks had nine points; Clay Thebeau had nine points and three assists; Harris had four points; and Shane Myers had one point.
