On May 17-18, the V.F.W. Auxillary Post No. 2173 will be passing out Buddy Poppies for donations. The money raised from the poppies will go toward the Veterans Home and Hospital, National Home for Children (home for orphans of our nation’s veterans), phone cards for wounded veterans in the hospital and for active duty personnel, flags for the cemeteries and other projects that support the veterans.
The Poppy was adopted as the official memorial flower in 1922 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. They are assembled by the disabled and disadvantaged veterans who are paid for their work, providing them with a form of financial assistance and giving them a feeling of belonging by doing the job.
When seeing an Auxillary member with the Poppies, remember to them it’s all about helping veterans and living up to the V.F.W.’s motto “Honor the Dead by helping the Living.” The Poppy reiterates that the V.F.W. and Auxillary will not forget the sacrifices of all men and women who have served and still serve today.
Buddy Poppy proceeds represent no profit to any V.F.W. unit. All the money contributed by the public for Buddy Poppies is used in the cause of veterans’ welfare and the well-being of their dependents. On Memorial Day, fly flags with honor, give a small donation for a Buddy Poppy, wear it proudly, pause for one minute to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us and take time to thank a veteran.
It is so important to remember that Memorial Day is about the sacrifices of our military. Everyone is invited to the program held on Memorial Day.
