VANDALIA—Few people take the time to learn the etiquette of displaying or retiring the U.S. flag. But if you have one that you have flown proudly outside your home or business, and it has become frayed or tattered, there is a proper way to retire that flag.
The Vandalia VFW Post No. 2173 Auxiliary recently installed a Retired Flag drop box next to the Veterans Memorial wall in front of the YMCA on 309 S. Main Street.
The box is for old or retired American flags, where they will be disposed of following the U.S. Code. Flags can be burned, recycled, or buried, according to the code. This is so the flag will not end up in places such as trash dumps or otherwise misused.
The service is ongoing and will be carried out by the VFW Auxiliary.
