The President and CEO of Niemann Food Inc., Rich Niemann Jr., and Gerry Kettler, Director of Consumer Affairs were both in Vandalia for a Rotary Club meeting on Thursday, September 5.
Following lunch and club business, Niemann took the podium to discuss the IGA acquisition and the future plans of what is now called County Market.
Along with all the store renovations, NFI has also been integrating new up-to-date systems and products.
“We’re a work in progress here at the store. The other thing that happened when we took the store, there is a different supplier for the store than what was coming in before. So, we have had some changes that way with products,” Niemann said. “In fact, we have reduced well over 6,000 prices here, since we took the store.”
NFI is currently in the process of buying the entire shopping center where County Market is located, from the Forum Development Group. Likewise, NFI is in the process of buying Vandalia Drug from owner Joe Salois. The goal is to have Joe and his staff working in the new County Market pharmacy by October 15.
“We have done this fairly often in our history because we think the synergies of the drug store and grocery stores do really well together,” Niemann said. “We’re all about growth and that of course helps every community that we’re able to do that in because it increases the tax base. What you don’t want is dollars that can be spent here leaving this area, and we understand that.”
A future addition to the shopping center will be an Ace Hardware store. Ace will take up about two-thirds or 10,000 square feet of the outgoing ALCO store.
The expected grand opening of Ace Hardware is some time later this year or early spring 2014.
“We really feel that we can bring the shopping center to life out there, which will be important for both us and the community,” Niemann said.
NFI owns and operates over 100 supermarkets, convenience stores, pet and hardware stores in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. NFI Headquarters is located in Quincy, Ill.
NFI will be upgrading all of their convenience stores over the next several years, which will include the Vandalia Pick-A-Dilly store.
County Market is an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) company, which is a profit sharing program that will benefit employees that work 1,000 hours a year and are at least 21 years old.
After a year, any employee that meets that criteria will become an owner in the company.
