The Van-Far varsity girls basketball team played through the final seconds of the contest but couldn’t pull out a win over Tolten, falling 43-11.
The Lady Indians played a tight game through the first quarter keeping up with Tolten and trailed by just two points at 11-7 by the end of quarter.
Tolten started the second quarter with a 7-0 drive before allowing Van-Far its only field goal of the quarter and ended the half with an 18-9 lead.
The Lady Trailblazers opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run. Brooke Johnson broke the rally at the free throw line putting the Lady Indians at a 27-10 deficit with Tolten Catholic delivering another 9-0 run to close the quarter.
Chevi Windland broke the Lady Trailblazers fourth-quarter, 7-0 rally with 53 seconds left in the game at the line for a Tolten Catholic 32-point victory.
Van-Far was 2-for-14 from the field in the first half and 5-8 from the line. At 0-for-6 from the field in the second half, the Lady Indians only made two shot attempts from the field in the fourth quarter, relying on making 7-for-16 free throws for the majority of the club’s points.
Brooke Johnson led the Lady Indians with four points, six rebounds, and two steals; Katelyn Allen tallied three points and two rebounds; Breanna Strange chipped in two points and two steals; and Chevi Windland had one point.
Drops win to Silex
The Lady Indians kept their heads up in a 59-23 loss to Silex on the road Friday, January 11.
The Lady Owls posted 22 points in the first quarter and ended the half up 38-8.
Silex outscored Van-Far 17-9 in the third and finished the game 6-4 in the fourth to beat the Lady Indians.
Strange led Van-Far with six points; Annaliese Hubert, Craven, and Nelson chipped in four points; Kambrie Hartsell had three points; and Johnson had one point.
“The girls played much better on Friday night against Silex,” Van-Far head coach Sarah Asbury said. “They kept fighting the entire game and never put their heads down no matter what the score was. As a coach I also saw a lot of improvements, especially compared to the second half of the Tolten game. We have a tough couple of weeks ahead of us in tournament play and the key is to keep improving with the little things and as a team.”
