Memorial services for John Orville Hobbs, 66, of Mexico will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Laddonia Baptist Church with Reverend Tommy Barnhart officiating.
Mr. Hobbs passed away at 5:44 p.m. July 31, 2013 at University Hospital, Columbia. He was born January 1, 1947 in Mexico, the son of James Orville and Josephine Wright Hobbs. Survivors include: one brother and his wife, Darrell and Cheryl Hobbs of Perry; one sister-in-law, Carla Hobbs of Laddonia; four nieces, Eva Eikel and Beth Swaim of Martinsburg, Nicole Luckett of Vandalia, and Megan Luckett of Perry; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil Hobbs; and one sister, Donna Kay Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs was a lifetime area resident and member of the Laddonia Baptist Church. He was a 1965 graduate of Community R-6 High School, then a graduate of Truman State University where he obtained a degree in English. He then obtained a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He worked for the Galesburg, Illinois newspaper and taught in Jamestown. He then went to work for the Missouri Department of Economic Development, retiring after 20 years. After his retirement he became a greeter at Walmart and worked part-time at Moberly Area Community College. He enjoyed collecting antiques.
