Community R-VI students in Mrs. Madsen’s class are reading daily to improve their reading skills through the “REV UP YOUR READING” program.
The Community R-VI students participated by: reading to their parents, retelling the story they read, and answering comprehension questions after they read a book.
Any book the students read (whether it was for homework, or Read and Respond, or reading just for fun) was counted for Mrs. Madsen’s class.
Students read books on their reading level from the school library, public library, or books they had at home.
Reading for even a short period of time every day (10-20 minutes) can build and increase a child’s reading skills, fluency (smooth reading like talking), and comprehension (understanding what they read).
Parents could ask their child questions about the story they read, including: characters-people or animals in the story, setting-where and when the story took place, conflict-the problem or problems in the story, and solution-how the characters solved the problem.
Parents could also ask their child to explain the 5 “W’s” of the book: who, what, where, when and why.
Younger readers can tell about or describe the beginning, middle, and end of the story they read.
Ten Community R-VI students (in grades 1-5) helped the class read books during first quarter.
The 2012-’13 first quarter book reading count was 65 books.
Ten students (in grades K-5) helped the class continue to read books during the second quarter.
The first semester 2012-2013 book reading count was 149 books.
Students are encouraged to continue reading and retelling.
