The Community R-VI Varsity softball program entered the Class 1, District 8 Tournament hosted by Sturgeon on Wednesday, October 3 as the No. 7 seed against No. 2 seed Sturgeon.
The Lady Trojans season came an official end with an 11-1 loss.
Community R-VI tied Sturgeon in the first at 1-1 but the Lady Bulldogs led 2-1 in the second. Sturgeon pulled away late with five runs in the fourth, adding four runs in the fifth.
Paige Curtis tossed the five inning game allowing eight hits. She had six strikeouts.
Curtis was 1-for-3 at the plate and Harris was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
The loss meant it was the last game for seniors Curtis and Harris.
“I’m losing my pitcher and catcher,” Community R-VI head coach Stacie Carroz said. “They have been a tremendous combo to work with. I really looked at Curtis and Harris to get the team going with leadership. They are going to be missed for sure.”
The Lady Trojans gained an additional five players at the start of the season and Carroz said all of her younger players progressed throughout the season.
“I think of a team that got significantly better,” Carroz said.
“They improved individually, as well as an entire team.”
Carroz said she’ll be looking for her up-and-comers to fill in gaps left by Curtis and Harris.
“It’s sad to see them go but it gives opportunity for my younger girls,” she said. “(Curtis and Harris) will be missed for sure.”
Loss to Clopton
Community R-VI lost 16-6 to Clopton on Monday, October 1 in their final regular season game before districts.
The Lady Trojans trailed Clopton by two at the end of the first inning and tied Clopton in the top of the third at 4-4.
Both Community R-VI and Clopton added two runs in the fourth with the Lady Hawks up by one run. Clopton pulled away with seven runs in the fifth, adding one run in their last at-bat for the victory.
The Lady Trojans matched the Lady Hawks with 11 hits but committed twice the errors at six.
Curtis tossed the seven-inning game with seven earned runs, four walks, and 11 strikeouts.
Leading hitter for Community R-VI was Harris who went 3-for-4 with one double.
The Lady Trojans were 4-14 on the season before districts.
