MLK Celebration set for Second Christian @ Second Christian Church

The Second Christian Church will be having their annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. program on Sunday, January 15 at 3 p.m.
The speaker will be Elder Richard Smith of Faith Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C. in Vandalia. The pastor of Second Christian Church is the Reverend Melvin McCaleb. The associates are Brother Robin    Terrell and Brother Oscar Williams.

Scott’s Corner/Basinger Corner meeting @ Community R-VI

The Citizen’s Advisory Group (CAG) meeting to discuss potential intersection improvements at Scotts and Basinger Corners in Audrain County that was scheduled for Friday, January 13 has been rescheduled to Friday, January 20.
The location and time will still be at Community R-VI school in Laddonia at 4 p.m.

Card Party and Supper for VAHS is Jan. 21

The Vandalia Area Historical Society (VAHS) will be holding its annual Card Party and Supper on Saturday, January 21 at the museum. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for appetizers. Supper will be at 6 p.m., followed by the Card Party at 7 p.m.
The museum will be open Saturday, January 14 from 10 a.m-1 p.m. to purchase and/or pick up tickets. Tickets can also be purchased by calling Charlene Teague at 594-3026.

YMCA Project to hold upcoming fundraisers @ Pizza Hut

Through the generosity of area residents, the Eastern Missouri Family YMCA has a current balance of $1.57 Million for the construction of the facility. To continue efforts to reach the $2 Million goal, the YMCA is sponsoring upcoming fundraisers.
The first fundraiser is in conjunction with Pizza Hut on January 30 from 5-9 p.m. On that evening, 20% of all sales (dine-in, delivery, and carry-out) will be donated to the YMCA project. In addition, YMCA committee volunteers will be waiting tables and all tips will also be donated.  Please help support the YMCA by dining at Pizza Hut in Vandalia on January 30.
Another fundraiser is still in the planning phase, but will be held on March 25 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Parish Center. That fundraiser will feature an enjoyable meal. Please mark your calendar and watch for more details. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Please visit the project website, www.emoymca.org to access a pledge form or email emoymca@gmail.com. 92nd Soil and Crops Conference set for Jan. 30

The 92nd Annual Audrain Soils and Crops Conference will be held Monday, January 30 at the Mexico Vocational Agriculture Center, just north of Mexico High School on Wade Street.
Supper will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the High School Cafeteria and the program will start at approximately 6:15 p.m. The concurrent sessions will be held at the Mexico Vocational Agriculture Center, which is just across the parking lot.
There will be an excellent variety of concurrent sessions including:
• Updates from USDA, NRCS, and Farm Service
• Variable Rate Fertilizer
• Offsite movement of Dicamba
• New Rules for UAVs
• MU Soil Health Lab vs. MU Soils Testing Lab
• Grain Storage Management
There will also be three family sessions including:
• Straw Bale Gardening
• Cooking with Beef
• Home Canning.
This will also be an opportunity to learn about a new program at MU called “Pharm to Farm.”
“The planning committee has chosen an excellent variety of topics including technology, research, and family. The committee tried to choose topics that would be helpful and interesting,” said Mary Sobba, ag business specialist.
This program is open to all. But RSVP is requested by January 25. Call the Extension Center at 573-581-3231. Supper will be provided by the Mexico Young Farmers and the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council. It will be served by the Audrain County Farm Bureau. The program will conclude approximately 9 p.m. The planning committee for this event consisted of Audrain Extension Council members Scott Brooks, Cameron Oliver, Tina Schmeling, Bobby Stone, Ryan Hollenberg; Ted DeVault, of Mexico Young Farmers; agronomist Max Glover; agricultural engineer Kent Shannon; and agricultural businessperson Mary Sobba.
