Schedule released for 4th of July event in Laddonia
Jul 4 all-day

The official schedule has been released for the 65th Annual 4th of July Celebration to be held on Tuesday, July 4 in Laddonia. The annual event, sponsored by the Laddonia Athletic Association, will be geared towards honoring active and veteran military personnel.
This year’s event begins with an Honor Flight breakfast at the Laddonia Christian Church from 7-10 a.m. Veterans eat free. Other meals cost $5.
At 8 a.m., raffle sales start and the POET corn trailer is open.
At the same time, the Co-Ed Softball Tournament begins. It features a $150 entry fee. Those interested in participating should call 573-975-0991.
The Baby Show, Little Mr. and Little Miss Contest, and Look-A-Like Contest get started at 9 a.m. Registrations will be taken from 8-9 a.m. Entry fee is $2.
Baby Show classes are 0-6 months, 7-12 months, 13-18 months, 19-25 months, and 25-36 months. Contestants can wear anything.
Little Mr. and Little Miss contestants should be ages 3-5 and must wear patriotic attire. In the case of rain or extreme heat, the event will move to the First Baptist Church.
The Vendor Show starts at 10 a.m. Those wanting to be a vendor can call 573-721-4001.
The Laddonia Ladybugs are sponsoring the 11 a.m. parade. Line-up starts at 9:30 a.m. and judging starts at 10 a.m.
Bounce Houses open at noon, followed by the 1 p.m. Kids Book Walk.
The annual Horseshoe Pitching Tournament starts at 1 p.m. with three classes and a $10 entry fee. Call 573-721-2367 if interested. The Kids vs. Parents Ball Game is at 2 p.m. and is a free event. Call 573-253-1800 for more information.
Free Kids Games begin at 3 p.m.. They include a hula hoop contest, water balloon toss, bubble gum blowing contest, sack races, turtle race, frog jumping contest, three-legged race, and bike races.
A Cake/Baked Good Walk begins at 4 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. Homemade Ice Cream Social.
The Family Relay Race starts at 5 p.m. and the event is free.
The “Lost Laddonia Boys” with Kaiden Doebelin start their performance at 5 p.m.
An Old Timers Ball Game is at 7 p.m. for those 50+ years old. The event is free and is a co-ed tournament. Call 573-721-2158 for more information.
Raffles winners will be announced at 7:30 p.m. and winners need not to be present to win.
Hall of Fame Awards will be given out at 8 p.m. with a Candy Toss by the Laddonia Fire Department following at 8:30 p.m. At 9 p.m., a lantern release will be done for active and veteran military personnel.
The annual fireworks display follows at 9:15 p.m. or at dark.

The Farber Fun Fest Committee will hold a planning meeting on Wednesday, July 5 at 7 p.m. in the Farber Community Building. We need interested parties to attend. Everyone is welcome.

A full schedule is set for the upcoming 41st Annual Vandalia Area Fair set for Thursday, July 6-Saturday, July 8.
Entertainment slated for this year’s event includes several returning performers.
Thursday evening features the return of “Class Act Duo,” Rick and Judy Francis, from 7-9 p.m.
Day two’s entertainment features the return of “Contagious,” who is considered by many as “St. Louis’ Ultimate Party Band.” They will perform from 8-10 p.m.
The final evening features the return of the “Push Band” from 7-10 p.m.
Day one begins with the decorated tricycle/bicycle contest at the Vandalia Post Office at 5 p.m. before the 5:30 p.m. parade that starts at South School. At 6 p.m., the Alethea Club will host an Ice Cream and Cake Social in the school building.
Sign-up for the Little Mr./Little Miss Contest is slated for 6-6:25 p.m. in the pavilion before the 6:30 p.m. event.
The Horse Arena will be the site of the 7 p.m. Horse and Pony Fun Show.
The Missouri Farm Pullers will also start their event at 7 p.m. on the main track while “Class Act Duo” entertains at the Fair.
Day two features a 5:30 p.m. sign-up for the Mud Pig Catch in the Horse Arena. The event starts at 6 p.m.
From 6-10 p.m., the Dam Few Car and Motorcycle Drive-In will be held.
A Toy Scramble starts at 7 p.m.
“Contagious” entertains in the evening.
Day three opens with the 4-H and FFA Cattle Show in the Cattle Barn at 10 a.m.
Later at 4:30 p.m., the Missouri Girls Rodeo Association (MGRA) training barrels begins. The MGRA event starts at 6:30 p.m.
Sign-ups for the Baby Show is from 5-5:45 p.m. as the event starts at 6 p.m.
Money in the Straw will be held at 6:30 p.m.
The Mid Mo Truck and Tractor event starts at 7 p.m. on the Main Track.
“Push Band” concludes the Fair that evening.
The Fairgrounds will be open from 5-11 p.m. all three days. Inflatables open at 5 p.m. each day.
Admissions costs $5 on Thursday while kids 3 and under are free. Friday’s and Saturday’s admission costs $10 for adults, kids ages 4-12 are $5, and kids 3 and under are free.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be held at New Harmony Christian Church on July 13, 14, and 15. The “kick-off” will be on Thursday, July 13, with a swim party at the Vandalia Pool from 7-9 p.m.
On Friday, July 14, VBS will begin with a light supper being served at 5:30 p.m. at the church with classes, crafts, etc., continuing afterwards and ending at 8 p.m.
They will meet again on Saturday, July 15, from 9-11:30 a.m., and afterwards there will be a carry-in meal with hot dogs and drinks being furnished.
Sunday, July 16 will be “Youth Sunday” with the youth leading the entire service. A Hymn Sing will be held during morning worship services on Sunday, July 2 at 9 a.m.. Everyone will be invited to request one of their favorite hymns to be sung during the service. Everyone is invited and welcome at all services at New Harmony Christian Church.

Faith Tabernacle to host “Men’s Day”

The Faith Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C., of 907 West Home St. in Vandalia, will observe their annual “Men’s Day” on Sunday July 9.
The afternoon service will begin at 2 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Reverend Frankie McGuay, of Faith Deliverance Church, of Davenport, Iowa. Rev. McGuay sings with a gospel singing group called “Chosen” and has professionally recorded CD’s, which will be available. The theme for this event will be “Living a Principled Life in an Unprincipled World.” Pastor Richard Smith and the congregation invites the public to attend.
Dinner will be served following the morning service around 1 p.m. and until the time of the afternoon service at the Modern Maturity building, 506 E. Joe St. in Vandalia.

Magician slated for Vandalia’s library

The Vandalia Library will be having a free Magic Show on Monday, July 17 at 1 p.m. Children of all ages and adults are invited to see professional magician Rick Eugene, from Iowa, perform his awesome magic tricks.
The children participating in the Summer Reading program are reminded that the last day to return their reading log is July 17. The library is located at 401 S. Lincoln. If you have any questions, call 594-6600.
