Parents invited to First Impact event
Apr 18 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

“Think First Missouri,” in partnership with the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the Traffic and Highway Safety Division, has developed an evidence-based, facilitated Traffic Safety Parent Program called “First Impact.”
“First Impact” is a 90–minute evidence-based traffic safety program that educates parents about Missouri’s GDL law. The goal of First Impact is to reduce new driver crashes, and the resulting injuries and fatalities, by increasing parental awareness and enforcement of Missouri’s GDL law.
Objectives of the program are to increase wareness of teen driving risks, advance the understanding of Missouri’s GDL law as well as GDL monitoring and enforcement at home, and also understanding the importance of being a positive role model.
First Impact provides the tools parents need to monitor, coach, and support their new teen driver. First Impact features a video and discussion to promote the importance of parents and teens working together to reduce teen crashes, injuries and fatalities.
Ensuring parents understand the risks and responsibilities associated with driving is essential in preventing teen driving tragedies.
The program is delivered by trained GDL Coaches who coach parents by presenting key facts and proven strategies to help parents lower their teens’ crash risk by utilizing the Missouri GDL law.
The “First Impact” Program will take place free of charge with the goal of reducing teen fatalities:
• Wednesday, April 4, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Mexico High School, 639 Wade.
• Wednesday, April 18 at Van–Far High School on April 18, from 6-7:30 p.m.
Parents are invited to attend the event.

Exercise Tiger Ceremony set for April 28 in Mexico
Apr 28 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

On Saturday April 28 at 1 p.m., the National Exercise Tiger Ceremony will take place at the Audrain County Courthouse in Mexico. The Missouri State Exercise Tiger Memorial is located there and hosted a number of State and National ceremonies between 1999 and 2010.
For 2018, the National Tribute “Comes Home” to Missouri after being held at various USCG bases in the past 7 years. “As this is the 30th Anniversary of the USTF and honoring these fallen and forgotten soldiers, we felt we should come home for this ceremony” National Executive Director Susan Haines said.
The Governor is giving the annual proclamation and the Secretary of the Navy has prepared remarks that a U.S. Navy officer will deliver. Additionally, Brigadier General William Ward will be the keynote speaker. The Audrain County Commissioners will also be speaking and several wreaths will be placed, along with flowers at the anchor by the officers and veterans.
Following the wreath placings at the Navy Anchor, medals and special DOD Vietnam War pins will be given to the veterans.
“We want all veterans and any family members of those who died in Exercise Tiger to attend,” Haines said. Flowers will be given out for any family member to lay at the base of the anchor as well.
We ask that any Vietnam veteran contact us prior to Saturday’s event so that we can make sure his name is on the certificates that are given out.
Contact the USTF at 573-356-3093 or 609-713-5542 or online at exercisetiger.org, susan.haines@exercisetiger.org, or shaine@socket.net
Any organization wishing to participate or volunteer may contact the USTF as well.
The USTF is a nationally recognized non-profit based in Columbia, Mo., that honors veterans and active military through out the nation. Since 1989, the USTF has annually honored this battle in which a 1,000 soldiers and sailors were killed. Over 200 troops killed were from Missouri. A memorial is located in Mexico, Mo. In addition, State Highway 54 is renamed in their honor from I-70 to the city of Mexico. The USTF is recognized by the Dept. of Defense, Secretaries of the Navy, Army, and Air Force as well as the U.S. Coast Guard which annually takes part in wreath laying with the USTF. Its annual “Adopt A Warrior” program is a hallmark in Columbia every November for 19 years.
