Smith helps Belgium team to solid start

Van-Far graduate and current international basketball player Mike Smith is enjoying his first season as a starter for the Belgium team, Mons-Hainaut. Smith is currently the second leading scorer on a team that has started the EuroChallenge play in Group E with a 2-0 record. Smith’s team is currently sitting in a tie for first place with Nanterre.     The Van-Far Lady Indians basketball team is optimistic about the 2014-2015 season, one year removed from a 2-22 record. They will have to overcome the loss of their second leading scorer Brooke Johnson to graduation as well as defensive specialist Haven Atkinson and starting point guard Ciara Craven, but several returners will be key to their success.     Conner Albrecht was the lone Indian to receive All-EMO Conference honors on both sides of the ball.

    Six different Van-Far/Community R-VI football players earned All-EMO Conference honors for their performance during this past season where the Indians finished with a 5-6 record. The Indians were led by Nick Barnes, who was an unanimous selection as a first team punter. During the year, Barnes had 29 punts for 1,307 yards for a 45.06 yards per punt average.   • Community R-VI kicks off Winter season with Fan Fest event

    Community R-VI celebrated their Winter sports athletes last week when they held a Fan Fest at the district in Laddonia. The event featured carnival games, photo opportunities with the Trojan mascot, face painting,  concessions, drawings, and more.     The Van-Far 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams have experienced early season success after battling Clopton and Bowling Green last week.     The Community R-VI Junior High boys basketball team improved to 3-0 two weeks ago after a 55-33 victory over St. Brendan. The Trojans led by six at the end of the first quarter before pushing ahead 31-15 at halftime. Community R-VI outscored St. Brendan 24-18 in the second half and held on for the victory.     The Community R-VI Lady Trojans Junior High basketball team continued to have success on the court last week after outscoring their three opponents 116-58. Mark Twain The Lady Trojans jumped out to an early 15-2 first quarter lead on the Lady Tigers and went ahead 27-3 at halftime. Community R-VI held off a second half charge before cruising on to a 42-23 victory. Dalaney Bowers scored a team-high 16 points.
