Trumpeter swans make visit to Vandalia property

    -submitted by Mick Hayden During the summer of 2013 I was greatly encouraged that our initial attempt at re-establishing barn owls in the surrounding area was bearing fruit. Four young owls were born in a nest box on the Rachel Kohl farm southeast of Vandalia.   • Squirrel uses flag for nest

    Vandalia’s Ted Hesse had been missing a large portion of an American Flag that was once on a pole attached to the front of his porch. Apparently, a squirrel removed the flag when it was laying on his porch’s roof and it now resides inside a nest at the top of a tree in his front yard.

  • New generation of Barn Owls make home in area

    In May of 2012, four young Barn Owls were released in an attempt to re-establish a population of birds that are all but gone from eastern Missouri. This was done with the help and cooperation of three parties. The World Bird Sanctuary of Valley Park, Mo. raised the young owls from captive breeding pairs and brought them, three females and one male, to the farm of Rachel Kohl in rural
