On September 27, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., the Vandalia Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its eighth opportunity in three years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.   • Veterans Affairs Bus to be in town

    A Veterans Affairs bus from Columbia will be in Vandalia for Prairie Days on Saturday, September 27 to answer any questions veterans or their family members might have in regards to veteran affairs. Local VFW Post No. 2173 Commander Marty Nation is also reminding area veterans that if they’re interested in joining the local VFW, they can do so on Prairie Days.   • AMC board holds meeting

    The Audrain Medical Center Board of Trustees met Thursday, August 28 with Bill Dubbert, chairman; Sterling Oliver, vice-chairman; Jo Ellen Craghead, secretary; and Peter Perll, M.D., member in attendance.   • AMC gets breastfeeding award

    Audrain County Health Department (ACHD) presented Audrain Medical Center (AMC) with a Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite Award (Silver Standard). There are three standards to the award: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. AMC is the first worksite in Audrain County to receive the breastfeeding friendly worksite award (silver standard).   • Blood pressure screenings

    The Audrain County Health Department will offer free blood pressure readings on the third Friday of each month from 1:15- 2:15 p.m. at County Market Pharmacy in Vandalia beginning on September 19. High blood pressure directly increases the risk of coronary heart disease (which leads to heart attack) and stroke, especially along with other risk factors.     Staff from Ennis Implement in Vandalia recently took on an ice bucket challenge from the Ronnie Heaton family. They used a tractor for the challenge that was operated by Sonny McCurdy. Ennis Implement has since challenged Jerry and Janet Epperson, Jordan and Kylie Epperson, and the office staff from Gentle Healthy Smiles.
