MFA Agri-Services’ grain elevator hits rock bottom
The MFA grain building comes crashing to the ground on Monday, August 12.
As of five minutes to six o’clock on Monday evening, MFA Agri-Services’ grain elevator located on West State Street was half gone.
Destruction crews worked hard to safely take down the old grain elevator that had become obsolete. The Vandalia Rural Fire Department was also on hand to assist.
The Vandalia Elevator and Supply was organized July 1, 1919 and was later acquired by the Missouri Farmers Association in 1964.
According to Leon Dempsey, the grain elevator was constructed some time between 1900 and 1901.
Dempsey worked at the MFA site as a manager for 34 years, 6 months from 1964 to 1996.
“It has outlasted it’s usefulness. Its too slow for the present day equipment and it needed to come down.” Dempsey said.
Plans to take down the adjacent grain bin are in the works.
