Community R-VI’s Justin Durham trots around the bases after hitting a home run against Van-Far.

The Community R-VI Trojans baseball team played their way into a No. 2 seed in districts this past week after winning four of their five games.
Their stretch included two big wins over EMO Conference foes Bowling Green and Silex in a Monday night doubleheader.
The Trojans started by knocking off the host Bobcats 4-3 behind a solid pitching performance from Jacob Eastwood. Eastwood tossed a complete game and struck out four while allowing just seven hits.
“Jacob has been very consistent for us all year,” said Community R-VI head coach Mike Boedeker. “He throws strikes and allows his defense to make plays behind him.”
Offensively, three of the team’s four runs came from home runs.
Cameron Foreman hit a solo home run in the fourth inning before Justin Durham gave the Trojans the lead in the fifth on a two-run shot.
“We’ve done a pretty good job putting the ball in play and making things happen,” Boedeker said.
“I like our approach at the plate the last couple of games and hope this continues.”
In game two, the Trojans defeated Silex 6-3.
Kaleb Harris started the game on the mound and tossed two innings while allowing just one unearned run. Lane Thebeau entered the game in relief to pick up the victory.
“Both of the guys worked down in the zone and that made for some quick innings,” Boedeker said. “They did a good job using both sides of the plate and making big pitches when they had too.”
Durham led the offense with a two-run home run in the third inning.
“Our jumps and secondary leads were key in tacking on runs late in the game,” Durham said. “Advancing runnings into scoring position helps us score on some singles we had (to) get through the infield.”
The two conference victories moved R-VI’s EMO Conference record to 5-3 and 7-5 overall.
Community R-VI also picked up wins over Madison and Van-Far last week before falling to Cairo 5-4.
In the win over the Indians, Foreman hit for the cycle going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Harris pitched a complete-game one-hitter and struck out 14 of the 15 batters he retired.
The Trojans play the winner of Silex and Higbee in districts on Monday, May 13 at Sturgeon.
