Three R-VI golfers get past districts

Before press time, the Community R-VI golf team had three golfers earn all-district honors while team finished third in the Class 1, District 3 meet held Monday, August 29 at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton.
The Trojans beat Father Tolton, Glasgow, Harrisburg, New Bloomfield, Paris, Sturgeon, and Van-Far. Louisiana won the district title with a 333 while Fayette also qualified with a 394.
Caleb Bertels led the Trojans after shooting a 95 for ninth place, Chris Wieberg advanced with a 99 in 11th place while Sean Wilson shot a 101 for 13th place.
Treyton Kobush finished with a 113 and Bryan Allen shot a 136.
Louisiana’s Dylan Smith won the district title with an 82.
The three golfers will now play at Sectionals held on Monday, May 6 at Heritage Hills in Moberly.
“I am very pleased with our play at district,” said Community R-VI head golf coach Vicki Briggs. “The course was wet and challenging and our boys hung in there. We finished higher than I hoped we would so it was very satisfying. Sean and Chris did not even take up golf until their sophomore years, so they have done very well. Caleb has been the team anchor and will be missed.”
Just a couple of years ago, the Community R-VI golf team knew it was likely their squad wasn’t going to compete for an EMO Conference title when they matched up with the more experienced programs.
Last week, the Trojans were true contenders for an EMO crown when Community R-VI participated in the EMO Conference meet at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton.
Community R-VI finished third overall with a 415, holding off Silex by five strokes. The host team North Callaway won with a 326 while Elsberry shot a 376 for second.
Montgomery City and Bowling Green tied for fifth with a 421, followed by Wright City (447) and Van-Far (533).
“We finished in third place and third in the highest finish we have had since our program began,” Briggs said. “All in all, it was a good performance by our team. I was very proud to have two all-conference players and finish as high as we did in the tournament as a team. In fact, it is our highest finish ever. We go back to play at Tanglewood on Monday for the district tournament and I think we will do even better.”
Caleb Bertels shot a 47 on the front nine and a 49 on the back nine for a 96 to earn all-conference honors.
Chris Wieberg also earned all-conference honors after shooting a 53 on the front nine before his solid 47 on the back nine.
Treyton Kobush shot a 51 on the front nine and a 53 on the back nine for a 104 to miss all-conference honors by just one stroke. Bryan Allen finished with a 110 and Sean Wilson shot a 124.
