Community R-VI track and field enters new era with new coach
With several key returners, the Community R-VI track and field team added a new head coach for the 2013 season, as well as five newcomers.
“As the new head high school track coach here at Community R-VI, I have high expectations of my athletes this 2013 season,” Community R-VI head track coach Erin Mack said.
She said Emmalee McCoskey’s and Leah Mays’ return will mix well with the team’s new additions.
McCoskey was a sectional high jumper during the 2012 season and Mays made the state meet during the 2012 cross country season.
The team adds junior Amelia Knipfel, hurdles and sprinter; junior Jewelee Winn, shotput and discus; senior Sean Wilson, jumps and distant runner; senior Cameron Foreman, long jump and distance runner; and Keith Caldwell, shotput and discus.
“This year’s team is a talented group of hard working athletes,” Mack said.
“The weather (snow days) has limited us to what we can do in practice, but they surprise me every day in their effort. These kids come to practice determined to do great things this season. Not only do I have high expectations, but they have high expectations of themselves, too.”
Mack said the weather has hindered the team, which calls for some tweaks.
“The weather has hindered us, as for our field events,” Mack said. “We could use a few nice days to dry things up. I have had to make a few minor ‘tweaks’ here and there to running forms or starting block positions, but their focus to do great things makes them coachable and the ‘tweaks’ easy to adjust.”
Community R-VI kicked off the season on Tuesday, March 19 ,at Westran.
