Vandalia moves forward on YMCA/Library project
The new YMCA/library steering committee is going for it.
The group decided gym space is a gem the community needs, adding the option to the project design for a more complete YMCA in one fell swoop.
“The plan we have, it is our goal to make that a reality,” Felicity Goodpasture-Culwell, head of the current planning committee, said. “Whether the people in the community realize it, there is a huge need for gym space.”
The committee has been tasked with everything needed to break ground and construct the project. A prior steering committee — tied to the city council — produced an initial design and funding resources.
With the deluge of youth sports teams in the area, Goodpasture-Culwell said keeping the gym part of initial construction will aid area kids in staying active to become fit adults, noting the project is valuable for all generations. Area youth teams currently are limited to Van-Far facilities.
“That’s a lot of teams to shove through two gyms,” Goodpasture-Culwell said. “That’s why the committee has decided to go for it. You won’t be able to build it any cheaper than you can today. It’s going to take all of the community supporting it to make it work.”
