Fair Association holds 2013 auction
The Vandalia Area Fair Association held its annual dinner and auction on Saturday, February 9, raising close to $11,000.
The Vandalia Area Fair Association is well on its way for this year’s festivities, slated for June 25-29.
The association held its annual dinner and auction Saturday, February 9, and close to $11,000 was raised for the fair after 148 total items were auctioned.
“We were really hoping to have a $10,000 auction,” Vandalia Area Fair Association President Jeff Carlyle said. “I think we got that beat.”
Carlyle said some of the big ticket items included six bags of Kruger Seed, which sold for $1,500; two bags of Channel Seed for $250; three hours of boating on Mark Twain Lake for $220; a Famous Money Jar for $220; a Lotto Basket for $200; 24 BBQ pork steaks cooked and delivered by Two Men and a Grill for $200; a signed Willie McGee Cardinal print for $170; a charcoal drawing by Ryan Nelson for $150; and a fish fry dinner for $130.
In a weird twist of fate, Marty Nation won the auction’s raffle for a Benelli Super Nova 12-guage shotgun. Nation then donated the gun back to the fair association and an additional $450 was raised. Nation had won the auction’s raffle last year for a .22 Henry Golden Boy. The same as this year, he then donated the item back to the auction to raise more money for the fair.
“Going into the fair, this puts us in a pretty good spot,” Carlyle said. “(The auction) is definitely a big help.”
