Community R-VI beats Sturgeon, Louisiana
Community R-VI’s Justin Durham gets double teamed by two Sturgeon defenders.
The Community R-VI boys basketball team’s second quarter surge helped the squad defeat a tough Sturgeon program, 46-35, at Mexico High School’s Gary Filbert Classic held Saturday, January 19.
“We didn’t shoot the ball really well but we did play well defensively,” Community R-VI head coach Dave Smith said. “We forced them into turnovers and got some forced some shots out of it.”
Sturgeon pulled ahead early after a tight 9-8 first quarter before Community R-VI held the Bulldogs to just four points in the second quarter for a 22-14 edge at halftime.
The Trojans lost the third quarter 8-6 but rallied late 18-14 in the final frame, sealing the squad’s 11 point victory.
“Obviously, they’re very good,” Smith said. “They are very talented. It was a very good win for us, very good.”
Lane Thebeau led with 14 points and two steals. Sean Wilson chipped in 12 points with seven rebounds; Clay Thebeau posted nine points with three assists; Connor Brooks had four points and eight rebounds; Justin Durham added three points with nine rebounds; and Kaleb Harris and Kyle Curtis each had two points.
The Trojans battled Louisiana in a 63-60 bout for victory on Thursday, January 24.
Louisiana was up 10 points by the end of the first quarter after posting an early 25 points and finished the half adding another 21 points for a 46-33 lead.
Community R-VI’s defense snapped into place in the third to hold Louisiana to five points while the Trojans rallied 22 points of their own for a 55-51 edge. Louisiana replied with a tight 9-8 run but couldn’t hold on for the win.
“We just let them penetrate too easily,” Smith said. “We don’t give up 46 points a game. We just went in and regrouped at halftime. In the second half, defensively, we just played fantastic. We just dug in defensively in the second half. In the first half we were just kind of in shocked.”
Lane Thebeau tallied 18 points to lead the Trojans’ scoring. Clay Thebeau followed with 16 points. Wilson posted a double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Cameron Foreman added five points; Sean Myers had three points; and Brooks, Harris, and Tyler Mays each chipped in two points.

The squads were point-for -point in the third quarter to leave Community R-VI down by just three points coming into the fourth quarter.
The Trojans late 16-13 rally in the fourth tied the game in the final frame before falling late in overtime.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well and you have to credit that to North Callaway,” Smith said. “They’re a good team. We feel like we threw the game away, we were just out of sink. You have to credit North Callaway.”
