R-VI girls edge Louisiana
The Community R-VI girls basketball club pounded out a 39-32 win after early foul trouble in the team’s home match against Louisiana on Thursday night, January 17.
“We kept them in the game by reaching too much and not moving our feet defensively,” Community R-VI head coach Bob Curtis.
“I knew it was going to be a good game, as I scouted the Lady Bulldogs this season and saw how they are a great mix of veteran players and some good freshmen. They have also played some quality teams close before and after Christmas.”
Community R-VI was up early after a 14-9 first quarter and went point for point with Louisiana at seven points to end the half with a 21-16 lead.
“I thought a big difference was the first four points of the second half that came from senior leader Paige Harris, who set the tone as Louisiana went into the locker room with some momentum. The lead swelled from five to nine right away, setting the mark for the second half,” Curtis said.
The Lady Trojans outscored Louisiana 9-5 in the third quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs responded by winning the fourth quarter 11-9.
Paige Curtis tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds; Amelia Knipfel and Harris each chipped in eight points in the seven point win.
Falls to North Callaway
Ranked fourth in the state for Class 3, North Callaway proved to be too much for the Lady Trojans’ varsity girls basketball team on Thursday night, January 17.
Community R-VI dropped its road match against the Lady Thunderbirds, 51-30.
Community R-VI head coach Bob Curtis said poor shooting in the first quarter helped lead to the loss. The Lady Trojans made just five field goals in the first quarter while North Callaway standout Madison Sorell tallied 18 points in the first 16 minutes of the game.
North Callaway led by 16 points at the end of the first quarter and edged the Lady Trojans 9-8 in the second for a 31-14 lead at halftime.
Community played close for the remainder of the contest but were outscored 8-6 in the third quarter and 12-10 in the final frame.
Amelia Knipfel and Emmalee McCoskey led Community with seven points; Paige Curtis and Paige Harris added six; and Ashley Steele chipped in four points.
The Lady Trojans are 8-4 on the season and 4-1 in the EMO Conference.
