Four Van-Far Indians scored in double digits during the varsity boys road contest against Wellsville on Friday, December 7.
Three Van-Far players had double-doubles for the Indians.
Van-Far finished the first quarter up 21-11 over the Tigers and led 34-22 at halftime.
The Indians scored 16-7 in the third quarter with the Tigers winning the fourth quarter 16-12 for a 62-45 victory.
“We came out and we were ready,” Van-Far head coach Pat Connaway said.
“We were focused. We knew it would be tough game. I don’t know if we can play any better than what we played in the first quarter.”
Brian Kurz led the Indians with 22 points and 13 rebounds; Nick Barnes posted 15 points with two rebounds; Ryan Nelson totaled 10 points with 15 rebounds; and Ethan Gooch put up 12 points with 10 rebounds.
Connaway said team cooperation was among the best he had seen for the Indians as the program communicated efficiently to play a balanced ball game.
“I’m very pleased with the balance. Anytime you have four double digits, your moving the ball and sharing the ball well,” he said. “If we continue balance like that, we’ll be a very good basketball team. We really executed our sets. Basically, we got all the looks we needed and our defense helped set up our transition. Our defense really set the tone for us in the third and helped us put the game away.”
Van-Far averaged 33 percent from the field through all four quarters.
The Indians were 13-for-23 from the line in the first half and 20-for-36 from the line overall.
The win against Wellsville was the third-straight victory for the Indians, who are 3-0 on the season.
“We’re off to a good start,” Connaway said.
“We have a long ways to go to get where we want to be. We’ll continue to work hard on the offensive and defensive ends.”
