The Van-Far Indians’ junior varsity boys basketball team held on late during a fourth quarter Tigers’ drive for a narrow 44-42 victory over Wellsville last Friday, December 7. At halftime, Van-Far led 26-17 going point-for-point against the Tigers to end the third quarter up 36-27. Wellsville’s fourth quarter 15-8 rally nearly upset an Indians’ victory, with the Tigers falling three points short of a win.
“I was really pleased with the progress the boys made from the South Callaway game to this one,” Van-Far head coach Pat Connaway said. “They did a really good job of executing sets in the half court and defensively we were a lot better. We were a lot more aggressive on both ends of the court (that night). Last week, we were pretty timid, hopefully, that was just first game jitters.”
Wyatt McDowell scored 18 points for the Indians with Nick Carter adding 12 points. Trent DeTienne tallied nine and Billy Picton posted four points.
“We did a pretty good job of moving the ball and we got a lot of wide open jump shots,” Connaway said. “We hit seven 3 point field goals tonight and overall we shot the ball pretty well. This game was a huge confidence boost for our kids, now we can go into the R-VI tournament with some confidence knowing we can win ball games.”
