The Van-Far Junior High boys  basketball squad edged Canton for a narrow, final-second Indians victory in the first round of the Mark Twain Tournament on Tuesday, November 26.

Van-Far was down 21-12 at halftime and Canton led  by 30-20 at the end of the third quarter.

“We were missing a lot of free throws, which we said were going to win the game for us,” Indians head coach Dane Brooks said.

In the fourth quarter, Van-Far trailed 39-34 with about 30 seconds on the clock.

Two steals and timely free throws from Cameron Barsé and Sharrod Connor put the Indians two points away from victory with just 6.8 seconds left in the game. Van-Far forced a five second count and handed Josh Hodde the ball with six seconds remaining.

“(Hodde) drove the lane and hit the game winner with just over two seconds left on the clock to give us the win 40-39,” Brooks said.

Top scorers for the game were Connor with 16 points, Lathyn McMorris with nine points, and Hodde with eight points.

The Indians moved into the semifinals against Palmyra on Wednesday, November 28 after press time.
