Two runners from the Community R-VI cross country squad traveled to Jefferson City to represent the school in state-wide competition.
On Saturday, November 3 Leah Mays and Ryan Kitchen ran at the state meet for the first time in their cross-country careers.
Leah Mays faced 160 runners at the meet. In the last 100 meters of the race, Mays passed 10 runners to take 51st place overall and 7th among  fellow district runners with a time of 23:47.
“Our districts for the girls were well represented by Salisbury, who took the girls-team title,” Community R-VI head coach Kris Cross said. “Elsberry took fourth place for the girls teams.”
Representing the boys team, Ryan Kitchen ran against 175 others to take 134th with a time of 20:33.
“Kitchen also had a nice finish passing four boys in the final 50 meters of the race,” Cross said. “And making it to state was a great way to finish his senior year.”
“Both Kitchen and Mays were a little taken back with how big state is,” she said. “It is hard to run really well the first time you participate in state due to the fact of never running there and how different it is. I feel they both had wonderful seasons and it was a nice way to finish the year.”
