Wright City rallied in the middle of the game to defeat the Van-Far Lady Indians softball team 8-5 on Wednesday, September 19.
Tied at 5-5 after the third, Wright City scored three runs in the fourth to take the win.
Wright City scored five runs in the first after two back-to-back walks, a single, and three-run home run.
Trailing 5-1 after the first, Payton Willis hit a double to put Ciara Craven on third base. Sarah Sutton then hit a single allowing both Craven and Willis home.
In the third, Mackenzie Baumbach reached on an error. Hartsell, courtesy running for Baumbach, then reached third base on a single by Hamlett. Hartsell scored on an in-field out by Brooke Johnson, and Hamlett scored a run on an error.
“(Wright City) only had one unearned run for the game, so we did play better defensively,” Van-Far head coach Wes Rowden said. “They got hits when they needed. The strike zone was tight, so Willis walked more than she usually does. We had two more hits than they did with 10, but still, they had more runners reach the base than we did because they were more patient at the plate than we were.”
Shutout by North Callaway
With only one hit, the Lady Indians lost 11-0 to North Callaway.
“We played well defensively and had no errors,” Rowden said. “We just did not hit the ball very well, but (North Callaway’s) pitchers are pretty good, so you have to give them credit for that. Plus, they did hit the tar out of the ball, as well.”
Sarah Sutton tossed the first two innings with four runs, seven hits, and four earned runs. Willis had seven runs, eight hits, one strikeout, three walks, and seven earned runs.
