The Community R-VI High School FFA chapter held its long-standing “Farm Safety Day” Friday, September 21. Community R-VI elementary students came to the high school and toured several stations covering electrical, chemical, animal, grain, combine, PTO, bus, and mower safety. Consolidated Electric, Sydenstricker, and the Missouri Farm Bureau helped with the event. Audrain Co. R-VI FFA member Julie Hays said FFA students and volunteers try to get kids to learn and respond to agriculture by focusing on key areas, of which kids may not be aware of the relation to agriculture.
“It’s really cool because we can get the community together,” Hays said.
Michele Koeling, Community R-VI agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, said there is a lot of risk associated with agriculture.
“We’ve had family and friends that have been severely injured on the job,” Koeling said. “This project is very close to our hearts. If (kids) could pull one thing out of this, we feel like we’ve done our job.”
