Clopton took an early lead September 13 at Farber’s Sportsman Park to hold off the Van-Far Lady Indians softball team for 7-2 victory.
Van-Far trailed 4-1 in the first after two singles and an error advanced Clopton runners to second and third base. A single scored both runners.
Another error and a wild pitch loaded third base again for Clopton.
The Lady Hawks then drove the ball to centerfield for their third run. A dropped fly ball gave Clopton a fourth run.
Van-Far’s Haven Atkinson stole second base in the fifth inning and took third on a wild pitch. Breanna Strange brought Atkinson home with an RBI ground out to shortstop with the Lady Indians still trailing 6-2 by the end of the fifth.
“We hit the ball back to the pitcher four times and really didn’t hit the ball out of the infield until the fifth inning,” Van-Far head coach Wes Rowden said.
“The last two innings we hit the ball hard three times into the outfield, but (Clopton) made some good plays on us.”
The Lady Indians had six hits and six errors for the game.
“(Payton Willis) did give up 12 hits, but if we had been able to make a few plays that were very makable, she would not have had to throw as many pitches,” Rowden said. “We just have to focus more and use our heads a little better next time.”
