The City of Martinsburg is prepping for its annual picnic to be held August 17 and 18 this year. The Martinsburg Picnic has been held since 1903.
Activities start Friday with the baby contest at 6 p.m., followed by the Little Mr. and Mrs. contest.
For the baby contest, participants must wear a plain white T-shirt, and a diaper or shorts. The categories are: 0-6 months; 7-12 months; 13-18 months; and 19-24 months. The grand champion baby boy and girl will be crowned.
For the Little Mr. and Mrs. contest, the categories are 3-year-olds, 4-year-olds, and 5-year-olds. The winning boy and girl will ride in the Saturday parade.
Other activities Friday evening include: a washer tournament, with registration at 6 p.m. and play at 7 p.m.; a turtle and frog race; a cake walk, sponsored by Merry Martin’s 4-H Club; and music by DJ Richie Lee.
Saturday starts with garden entries from 9-10:30 a.m. under the pavilion. Categories include basket flower arrangement, longest ear of corn, best gladiola, largest sunflower head, five nicest tomatoes and potatoes, and garden oddities.
The BBQ cook-off will fire-up Saturday morning with judging at 3 p.m. for best chicken, ribs, sausage, and picnic choice. The entry fee is $50.
The parade starts at 11 a.m. under the theme of “Martinsburg Picnic 2012 — an Olympic Event.” Judging for the parade starts at 10 a.m. sharp with awards going to: theme float, antique tractor, antique original vehicle, classic vehicle, kid’s entry, and horse and rider.
Other Saturday activities include the Martinsburg Area Fire Protection District Annual Co-Ed Softball Invitational Tournament, the Martinsburg Family Genealogy Through Pictures Photo Exhibit at the jail, a pedal tractor pull for kids aged 4-12 after the parade, a contest for the oldest person on the grounds and the person traveling the longest distance, guessing games for kids aged 6-12 until 3.p.m., more kids games at 3 p.m., and tug of war at 5 p.m. A dance will be held from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. Music is provided by Kelly Stanford.
