Laddonia skyline changed
Down buildings on E. 1st St.
Several Laddonia area residents driving through town on Highway 54 might have recently noticed several brick buildings being torn down.
A former insurance building has been torn down on Chestnut St., previously located next to FRK Modifications, LLC.
Owner Fred Reinwald said the structure was unsound.
On E. 1st St., several buildings have been torn down.
Those include the former Joe’s Barbershop, the old post office building, an old doctor’s office, and another building used for many uses in the past.
The mirror from the barber shop is now hung up on the wall at the Hard Ride Cafe, Bakery, and Saloon further down on E. 1st St.
Reinwald said the buildings had some vandalism through the years but most importantly, he was concerned about someone getting hurt by the crumbling buildings.
“The bricks were physically falling down,” Reinwald said. I didn’t want the liability as far as someone getting hurt…All of the interior mortar in the brick buildings turned back to sand.”
Reinwald said that he had thought to keep the doctor’s building, which previously suffered damage from a fire. He said the problem was the west wall was gone.
He said plans are to level out the areas, plant grass, and keep it cut.
The effort to clean up the area began with a vision last August when demolition crews brought down the old MFA grain bin in town.
Reinwald said he had the buildings torn down to continue a cleaning up effort in the City of Laddonia.
