Speaker set for Van-Far Alumni and Friends event
The Van-Far Alumni and Friends Association invite the Vandalia and Farber communities and all alumni and friends of the Farber, Vandalia, and Van-Far schools to its annual alumni dinner to be held September 27. The alumni dinner activities will begin at 5 p.m. with a social hour and registration in the Van-Far gym. During the social hour tours of the building will be provided by Van-Far students for guests who are interested in seeing changes and additions to the building since 1959 when it first opened its doors to students. A catered dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
The guest speaker and entertainment for the dinner will be Charlene Wheeler-Williams, a native Vandalian and 1984 graduate of Van-Far where she was a very enthusiastic cheerleader for the Indians! She is the daughter of William Wheeler, of Vandalia. Charlene is a well-known and dynamic motivational speaker and is also the founder and pastor of “Through and Through Ministries” located in St. Louis, Missouri. She serves as overseer and facilitator of Horizons Women Group, and Founder/Director of Heritage Gospel Choir. In addition to these responsibilities, Charlene is also a cosmetologist and an instructor of cosmetology. Rev. Char is the mother of three children and also has two adorable grandchildren. She and her husband live in St. Louis.
Those who hear Rev. Char speak are inspired by her enthusiasm, sincerity, and the thought-provoking message she presents. In addition to her talents as a motivational speaker, she is also a renowned gospel singer and will provide entertainment for the evening by sharing her talent in song.
Tickets for the dinner are available for $20 per guest and may be purchased from Craig’s Truck and Tractor Service, the Van-Far Principal’s office, or by calling 594-3308.
A limited number of tickets will also be available at the door on the evening of the dinner at a cost of $25 per guest.
Proceeds after dinner expenses go to the Alumni Scholarship Fund. One of the primary objectives of the Alumni Association is to provide scholarships to Van-Far students and alumni.
The 2014 scholarship winners will be honored at the dinner and have an opportunity to briefly explain their educational plans and goals for the future.
This year the Association awarded one $5,000 (renewable over four years) scholarship to Samantha Davis; and $500 scholarships to Ciara Craven, Payton Willis, Kenedy Hays, Dylan Mouser, Dakota Buie, and Brooke Johnson. Two renewable $4,000 scholarships (renewable for four years) awarded in 2012 and 2013 were also funded for Kasey Gatson and Ashley Rentfro.
Four $500 scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year have also been awarded to Van-Far graduates already attending college or trade schools. Spencer Trower, Brian Kurz, Sarah Sutton, and Tabitha Hopke were the recipients of these scholarships.
The Alumni Association is able to fund scholarships through generous contributions to the Alumni Endowment Fund, memorial contributions, gifts, and proceeds from the annual dinner.
The dinner is being held on the Saturday evening of Prairie Days, which provides an excellent opportunity for Alumni to participate in the downtown activities and then join fellow alumni and friends at the Alumni Dinner in a time of fellowship and reminiscing about their school days.
All Van-Far graduates as well as Van-Far friends and community members are cordially invited and encouraged to attend both the Prairie Days activities and the Alumni Dinner.
