Van-Far graduate Ryan Bontz is enjoying some time at home with his family after completing his first full year as a collegiate coach at Ohio Christian University.
Bontz, a former two-sport athlete at Hannibal LaGrange University, is a coach for both the cross county and track and field programs.
During the men’s and women’s cross country season, Bontz helped out a young Trailblazers program that had three runners qualify for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) nationals. One runner earned All-American status with a 15th place finish.
“It was a season of injuries but everybody recovered well and did well at the nationals meet,” Bontz said.
Bontz helped the program with recruiting and assisting in practices, warm ups, and meets.
“It was definitely a good learning experience,” he added.
In late February, he turned his focus to the indoor track season, which ended in March.
“We had a lot of freshmen coming in and it was a good learning experience for them,” Bontz said.
This past Spring, he worked with the track and field team’s athletes that featured two sprinters, two jumpers, three throwers, and one pole vaulter.
During meets, he helped the athletes get checked in and also worked with the sprinters.
He said one sprinter improved their time in the 200 meters from 25 seconds to 23.5 seconds.
“Overall, I think it went really well,” Bontz said about the season. “We had a lot of personal bests and had season improvements.”
He noted the overall experience as a collegiate coach has been a special one. He will remain at Ohio Christian for the 2014-2015 school year.
Bontz has been busy on the recruiting trail and is looking forward to helping several Trailblazers reach their goals next year.
