HUD To Offer Assistance
The not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) has announced it will open its waiting list and take applications for a housing rent-assistance program in 11 Northeast Missouri counties.
Applications for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 8 Housing Rent-Assistance Program will be taken starting at 8 a.m. May 12 at www.necac.org and at NECAC County Service Centers.
The affected counties are Lewis, Lincoln, Macon, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Pike, Ralls, Randolph, Shelby and Warren, and are known as the LCPHA 11-County Joint Housing Commission. The 11-member housing commission is made up of one county commissioner from each county, and all serve on the NECAC Board of Directors.
The waiting list opening also applies to Cuivre Township of Vandalia and Farber. Applicants in those areas will apply in Pike County.
NECAC is a 12-county area not-for-profit social service, community health and public housing Community Action Agency that administers and operates programs for the low-income, elderly, youth, handicapped and disadvantaged through partnerships, contracts and grants with federal, state and local governments, private businesses and other non-profit organizations. NECAC is one of 19 non-profit Community Action Agencies in Missouri and part of a national network of 980 agencies.
NECAC has administered the HUD Section 8 program for more than 30 years, and currently manages more than 2,500 HUD rent-assistance vouchers throughout its 12-county service area.
The agency has not been able to accept applications in the 11-county area since December 2012 because all program vouchers had been issued with all monies allocated.
Applicants who meet federal income and other guidelines will be put on a waiting list. Elderly and disabled applicants will be given preference. Once their names reach the top of the list, applicants will receive a renter certificate to search for an apartment, house or mobile home. The certificate holder may use the current place of residence if the landlord agrees to participate in the program.
NECAC provides certificate holders with a list of local landlords who participate. The certificate holders are responsible for making contact, applying for and signing an annual lease with the landlord. Potential tenants have 60 days to locate housing. After that time, the certificate becomes void.
The amount of the rent subsidy depends upon the individual or family income, size of the family and the unit they select.
Preference will be given to families who live or work in the county where they make application, and those who plan to live or work there. Proof of residency must be provided at the time of application.
Acceptable forms of proof are Social Security/SSI award letter, check stubs, current bank statement or utility bills.
