Boys need sudden death to decide winner of Showcase
Van-Far’s Kyle Decker looks for an open man with a Wright City defender on him.
A fun all-star game with EMO Conference boys basketball players quickly turned competitive in the final seconds during the Senior Showcase event held Friday, March 28 at North Callaway High School.
The White Team, coached by Community R-VI’s Kenneth Jett, led 104-98 late in the game before the Dark Team outscored them down the stretch 8-2 to tie the game at the end of regulation. Silex’s Matt Huber hit a game-tying basket at the buzzer to tie things at 106. Coaches and players decided to play a sudden death overtime, with the first basket giving that team a victory.
North Callaway’s Brett Metcalf was fouled on his shot and he made one free throw to seal the 107-106 victory.
It appeared early in the game that the Dark Team would run away with the showcase.
They jumped out to a 16-1 lead behind three 3-pointers and 11 points from Montgomery County’s Jerad Jordan.
The White Team charged back as Clopton’s Jack Hicks scored 14 points to close the gap to 38-36.
Bowling Green’s Austin Quarles scored 13 points in the half as the White Team entered halftime with a 53-48 lead.
Community R-VI’s Kaleb Harris didn’t score any points in the half. Meanwhile, Van-Far’s Kyle Decker was also scoreless but had a couple of head-to-head plays with his Indians’ teammate John Gerdeman.
Gerdeman scored two points for the Dark Team.
Hicks continued his onslaught in the second half with another 12 points. Meanwhile, Montgomery County’s Cameron Parrish added 11 points.
Elsberry’s Dylan Howard came up big down the stretch for the Dark Team with 11 points, including a dunk.
Silex’s Huber made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points, including the game-tying shot in the half.
Harris did score two points in the game for the White Team and added two rebounds.
Decker had four points and 12 rebounds.
Hicks scored a team-high 26 points with six rebounds.
Gerdeman scored just the two points but added four rebounds for the Dark Team.
Huber finished with 24 points to lead the Dark Team. Clopton’s Shelby Dunn won the girls 3-point contest while Montgomery County’s Jerad Jordan won on the boys side before winning the Battle of the Sexes. EMO Conference coaches and administrators were applauded for their time in between games. Meanwhile more than $300 was raised with the auctioning off of two autographed basketballs.
