Van-Far golfers are ready to compete

New Van-Far head golf coach Joe Basinger and his squad of just five members are looking forward to improving their scores during the upcoming season.
“Being my first year (as coach,) I just want to see us go out and compete and get better and see some improvement from meet to meet,” Basinger added.
Returning to this year’s squad is all-district junior Brandon Otis. Otis shot a 102 in last year’s Class 1, District 3 meet at Fulton to take 14th, earning him all-district honors.
Otis is joined by returning golfers Nick Crow (So.) and Trenton DeTienne (So.).
Basinger said DeTienne has put in some offseason work.
The returners will be joined by Nick Barnes (So.) and freshman Jayda Borgmeyer.
The weather has kept the team mostly off the course until this week.
Basinger said he’s thankful for the support of the Vandalia County Club.
“I don’t know how to express in words,” he added. “The club is so generous and so helpful…Their course is in wonderful shape.”
Van-Far’s first golf match will be against Paris at 4 p.m. on March 31. Their first home match is against Palmyra at 4 p.m. on April 3.
