Fraud case in Audrain

Posted on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 12:50 pm

Investigated a report of fraud.  Residents have reported that a man is traveling around the county contacting mostly farmers claiming to represent a company that advertises in the Farm Journal and/or purports himself to be a representative of the Farm Journal.  The man drives a dark colored Chevrolet S10 pickup with Illinois license plates.
When residents are contacted the man inquires about the people that are in the home; usually he asks if the husband is home if a woman opens the door or he asks if the wife is home if a man opens the door.  The man calls the resident by name when he stops by their home.
The man said that he wanted to do an interview of the residents about farming, cancer, and other personal information.
Through our investigation we have determined the man is not affiliated with the Farm Journal and presently do not know who he represents or what he is trying to accomplish.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person (s) responsible for this and any other incident.
If you have information that would help the Sheriff solve this or other crimes, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392-TIPS. Persons arrested for criminal offenses are merely accusations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
