EUGENE JENKINS

Eugene Jenkins passed away Dec. 10, 2013 at his home in Bowling Green.
Eugene was born June 16, 1919 in Baxley, Ga., the son of John and Onie Jenkins.
He first married Darlene Ogden.  They had three daughters, Barbara Montgomery, of Troy, Nancy (Frank) Scherder, of New Hartford, and Teresa (Kevin) Snow, of St. James. She preceded him in death.
He then married Barbara Ingram June 10, 1972 in Hannibal.  They had two sons Michael Eugene (Jodi) Jenkins, of Fairmont, Neb. and Richard Russell Jenkins, of Bowling Green.
Survivors include eight grandchildren, Wes Scherder, Ryan Scherder, Billi Jo Jennings, Alan Preston, Rogan Jenkins, Connor Jenkins, Trevor Jenkins, and Abby Jenkins; step-grandson Brendan Jolley; and five great-grandchildren, Mya and Garrett Scherder, Brittany, Crystal and Tony Jennings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Jamie Montgomery; brother, Gerald Jenkins; and sister, Colleen Wilson.
Onie Jenkins, his mother, passed away when he was young.  He was raised in Gainesville, Ga. by his Aunt Beulah, who was confined to a wheelchair her entire life from polio.
Gene joined the military and served in the US Army during WWII, Korea, and was a military advisor in Vietnam.  He completed four combat jumps with the 82 Airborne Division, including D-Day Invasion, and retired after 26 years with the rank of CW02.
Gene drove for Herman Bros., of Clarksville, hauling cement for Dundee Cement Company.  He retired after 20 plus years and was a member of Trucking Teamsters Local 688.
Gene loved to travel, shoot skeet, and garden, until his health failed.  He loved his grandchildren very much and also his dog Chloe and cat Fluffy.
Gene’s wishes were to be cremated.  There will be no public services.
Memorials may be made to the Pike County Hospice. Mudd-Veach Funeral Home was in charge of the cremation arrangements.
