Van-Far’s Alumni Association came to fruition at the 50th anniversary celebration. The overall goal of the Alumni Association is to connect those students who have graduated from the Van-Far school district, those that are currently teaching in the district, and friends of the school.
The association works diligently to provide college scholarships to seniors, school development projects, as well as other school related activities. The association began in 2009 and has given over $17,000 in scholarship since that time.
Formers students and friends of Van-Far R-1 High School came out on Saturday, September 28 for the 2013 Alumni All School Reunion.
Class of 1961 graduate and Alumni president Muriel Martin Beshears welcomed school graduates from 1943 to 2012.
The Class of 1943 led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the invocation by Lynette Heim Bikos.
Steinman’s Catering Service from Mexico provided dinner and desserts for all those in attendance.
Class of 1977 alumnus Jim Deppe introduced the 2013 Alumni $500 Scholarship winners, Cheyenne Gatson (2010), Carli Farrell (2012), Stephanie Fischer (2010), and Jordyn Hull (2009).
Van-Far students Ethan and Trevor Winders showed off their piano skills as part of the special music.
The guest speaker for the evening was Luke Heim, a 1988 Van-Far graduate and a 1992 graduate of the University of Missouri. Heim currently works for Dow AgroSciences R&D as a Global Contract Coordinator.
Heim encouraged people to get involved in school and civic organization activities through the use of props from a tackle box. He discussed how each item in the tool box had an individual purpose, but then they all work together to achieve one goal.
Beshears had members from each graduating class that was represented, to stand up, and be recognized.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by the Singing Van-Far Alumni and Teachers Group which was brought back by popular demand.
The group sang various school-themed songs, followed up by a Beatles medley.
After closing remarks were said and done, the evening of memories and laughter came to an end.
