Paris High School’s gymnasium will turn into northeast Missouri’s largest and busiest antique store on Saturday, March 24 when the community’s Xi Beta Xi sorority hosts its 30th consecutive show and sale.
According to show chairman Marcie Buckman, antique dealers from three states will be displaying items for sale.
“We have 36 dealers who have purchased booths for Saturday,” she said. “Not only do we have antique dealers coming from across Missouri, but we have Illinois and Iowa dealers that will be displaying merchandise.”
Items for sale will include fine china and glassware, selections of antique furniture, lamps, quilts, baskets, pottery, primitives, antique toys, vintage prints, jewelry, antique linens, antique advertising items, silver, sports collectibles, native American artifacts, and an assortment of country items, many dating back to the 1800s.
The show allows early bird shoppers to enter the gymnasium at 9 a.m., for a fee of $5; general admission begins at 10 a.m. for $3. The show runs to 3 p.m. and exhibitors are required to remain open until that time. Customers may come and go throughout the day, if they wish to return.
Mrs. Buckman said most visitors spend the day and enjoy the sorority’s wonderful lunch menu, featuring homemade vegetable and chili soups, sandwiches, croissants, and homemade pies. Lunch is served till 1 p.m. in the high school’s adjacent lunchroom.
Xi Beta Xi, a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, uses the annual sale’s proceeds for numerous community activities, supporting the needs of the community’s youth, citizens, and its seniors.
Mrs. Buckman said anyone that would like to help support her group’s community efforts, but weren’t interested in attending the antique show, would be admitted to the lunchroom and not be charged admission. Concurrently, she said her sorority welcomed any Mark Twain Lake area organization to advertise or place brochures out Saturday to promote their events.
The show has grown over the years, as visitors from all over the country have visited the lake area to attend the annual sale. The first year the show had 20 dealers from areas including Mexico, Columbia, Moberly, Eolia, Jefferson City, and Russellville
